Version History Introducing Firespot 6
The biggest Firespot update ever
Firespot 6 is a major revision to Firespot, with over 50% new code and deep optimizations and enhancements throughout the app.
NEW FEATURES:
- On-map overlays of infrared and true color satellite images of wildfires
- Upgraded wind and satellite data sources
- New UI built on the latest iOS methodologies
- Vastly expanded satellite fire hotspot detection database
- Improved map polygon rendering
- Faster HTTP/2-based server API
The main feature update in Firespot 6 is the satellite imagery. Firespot's servers continuously pull data from public-domain satellites (ESA's Sentinel-2 series) to build true color and infrared images of fires. The app lets you quickly scan through dates and view a fire's progression as seen from low Earth orbit. Firespot's unique infrared composite allows you to see fire through smoke and clouds, like X-ray vision.
Firespot is still as lean as ever, and now even faster. Our app takes up only 20MB on your phone- a rare thing in 2026. You'll wonder how we managed to stuff all those features in there.
Firespot 6 is optimized to the hilt, with response times reduced by 20-80% throughout the app. The satellite fire hotspot database is now optimized with delta updates, reducing data transfer by 90-95% during satellite hotspot updates. Wind data is now backed by a raster data source for faster loading and performance. 6.0 Sep 25 - Fixed a crash on some older versions of iOS 5.2.2 08/10/2023 - Fixed a potential crash in the image viewer 5.2.1 06/07/2023 - Now includes Canadian fires 5.2 05/18/2023 - Minor UI polish
